Foredraget følger Tove Ditlevsens vej fra baggården på Vesterbro til de store litterære gennembrud. Det er samtidig et portræt af det Vesterbro, hvor hun voksede op, og som spiller en central rolle i bøger som Barndommens gade og mange af hendes digte.
Ud over billeder bruger foredraget også forfatterens tekster.
